About this Session

In this interactive workshop, participants will step into the role of materials engineers and address the challenges of selecting and applying materials in various industrial sectors such as automotive, aerospace, and energy. The goal is to understand the different factors influencing material selection, including material properties, cost-effectiveness, economic feasibility, and sustainability. Participants will work in groups to discuss material choices for specific applications, evaluating how each material meets requirements like strength, durability, thermal resistance, and other technical specifications, while also considering environmental impact. They will also explore innovations in material science, such as nanotechnology and other developments that are shaping the future of materials engineering.
The objective is to give participants practical insights into the field of materials engineering and help them develop the skills necessary to make informed decisions when selecting materials for real-world applications. They will gain an understanding of the balance between innovation, sustainability, and economic considerations in modern material design and application.

The Presenters

Marián Drienovský (STU) and Marek Kudláč (STU)

Ing. Marián Drienovský, PhD. currently works at the Faculty of Materials Science and Technology in Trnava, Slovak University of Technology. Marian does research in Materials Science and Engineering. He has 10+ years of experience in the preparation of various metallic alloys using vacuum induction melting. His skills include the use of analytical instruments and techniques such as light optical microscopy, thermal analysis, and mechanical testing of materials. His current research interest focuses on the design, preparation and analysis of Multi-Principal Element Alloys suitable for hydrogen storage. Marek Kudláč is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Materials of the Faculty of Materials Science and Technology in Trnava, Slovak University of Technology. His research focuses on corrosion phenomena (including stress corrosion cracking, pitting corrosion, and intergranular corrosion) and the surface properties of materials (surface integrity and topography), particularly in materials used in the nuclear power industry. He specializes in both exposure-based and electrochemical corrosion testing, with an emphasis on stainless steels employed in the primary circuit of nuclear power plants. In addition, he is involved in the metallographic and fractographic analysis of welded joints. He taught seminars for the course Materials Science I.
