About this Session

This interactive workshop introduces students to sustainable construction strategies through the lens of bio-based materials and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Participants will explore how material choices influence embodied carbon, circularity potential, and long-term environmental performance. Structure and Interactive Elements: Short introductory lecture on sustainability metrics in construction (embodied carbon, LCA stages, circular design). Case-study analysis in small groups comparing conventional vs. bio-based material solutions. Group discussion on trade-offs between structural performance, cost, and environmental impact.

Maryna Babenko (STU)

Mgr. Maryna Babenko, PhD. is a specialist in sustainable development in construction, with a focus on bio-based materials design, circular construction principles, and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Her work integrates environmental performance evaluation with innovative material strategies to support low-carbon and regenerative building practices. She has experience in applying LCA methodologies to assess embodied carbon, material efficiency, and long-term sustainability impacts of building systems. Her research and professional activities aim to bridge academic knowledge and practical implementation, promoting climate-resilient design and responsible resource management in the built environment. She actively supports interdisciplinary collaboration between engineering, architecture, and environmental sciences to advance sustainable construction practices aligned with European Green Deal objectives.
